The Waning Moon and Shadow Work

The Hunter Moon has reached the peak of its illumination, and now the shadow once again begins to creep across the face of the moon's disc.  In most modern pagan spiritual practices, the moon represents intuition - the universal language that everyone speaks.  We all have instincts and impulses, and we all try to see into the future in our own way, even if it's just checking the weather forecast so we know how to plan our day tomorrow.  We know how to recognize patterns; it's our greatest evolutionary advantage as a species.  It's what allowed us to connect the movement of the stars and sun with an understanding of the seasons and the growth of plants, which paved the way for agriculture and, in turn, civilization itself.

But the moon also has another side in pagan spirituality: illusion.  Our propensity for pattern recognition has an unfortunate tendency to make us see patterns even where they don't actually exist, and this makes us prone to superstition.  The classic Waite-Smith tarot illustration for the Moon shows this duality of intuition and illusion in the form of a dog and a wolf: the tamed, trained, disciplined side of our mind, and the side that runs wild through the dark.  This developed sense of recognizing patterns can cause us to "fill in the blanks" when we don't have all the facts, and that gives us prejudices that make us susceptible to manipulation by people who are skilled in exploiting those prejudices.  It also makes us susceptible to falling into the traps of spiritual fluff: the kind of toxic positivity, harmful self-soothing, and syrupy psychology that I've spoken of before as something we should try very hard to avoid.

In my spiritual practice, I base a lot of my active introspection and action on the cycles of the moon.  As the moon waxes and becomes brighter and brighter, that is a time for tapping into the light reflected by the moon from the sun's fiery furnace of potential and focusing on achieving my goals.  The full moon is a powerful moment for spell work and other things that help me focus on my intentions.  But if you've followed me for any length of time, you know that Anubis - and indeed, the universe itself - demands balance in all things.  The light from the moon flows freely for a time, but each month, it inevitably ebbs away into darkness once again.  It is in the growing dark that I turn my thoughts inward, away from accomplishing my goals and towards examining myself.

The term "shadow work" is frequently invoked in pagan mysticism, but in point of fact, it likely has its origin in the work of the 19th and 20th century Swiss psychologist Carl Jung.  Jung described the "shadow self" as an aspect of each person's character.  To Jung, the shadow was comprised of the unconscious parts of ourselves that we often repress, either deliberately or simply because we've simply never recognized them.  In much of modern pagan thought, "shadow work" is about purging self-negativity or processing crises.  To be clear, there's value in that; I know I tend to criticize mainstream paganism quite a bit, but I'm not meaning to completely slap down the worth of self-soothing.  When your mind is in chaos because of some internal or external crisis you're facing, I fully understand that sometimes you can't fully process what you're feeling without using some self-soothing mechanisms to quiet your mind.  However, it's important to understand that whatever value that has, that's not what shadow work actually is - and make no mistake: true shadow work is absolutely necessary for spiritual growth.

In Jungian therapy, shadow work isn't about purging negativity; it's about bringing the repressed parts of ourselves to the surface and confronting them.  I've repeatedly stressed in this blog that spiritual maturity requires us to be radically honest with ourselves, and that's what shadow work really is.  It's the spiritual self-audit that we need to do from time to time in order to keep ourselves balanced.  Now, to be clear, there are pitfalls to avoid in this too.  One of the problems with depression and anxiety is that they create illusions for you that can be hard to reckon with, because they are traps woven from the fabric of your own mind.  It's very easy to look at yourself and say "You're right, I need to just be honest with myself.  I'm worthless, I'm failing at everything, I'll never be successful."  That's not honest self-reflection.  That's self-victimization.  That's wallowing.  That's surrendering your agency and your sovereignty because embracing the familiar misery of depression is often much easier than confronting what actually prevents you from becoming a better person.  In bluntly honest terms, that's not shadow work - it's a cop-out.  The ethos of this blog is that I'm not going to offer saccharine comfort, but neither am I going to sanction avoidant self-flagellation.

There are so many spells and rituals out there that focus on getting rid of or protecting yourself from "negative energy," and I think that does a disservice to the whole concept of seeking to align with the energy of the universe.  In my own grimoire, I am very careful to avoid talking about "negative energy."  I prefer to use terms like "unwanted energy" or "energy that harms me" because those terms are more honest, and those are energies that naturally build up in the cycles of life's ups and downs.  A fire is welcome in the fireplace, but not in the granary.  Energy isn't "positive" or "negative"; it is simply energy.  Its significance is not in what it is, but in how it affects us.  By the same token, shadow work isn't about purging "negatives" and embracing "positives"; it's about recognizing our internal mechanisms and catalysts, including - especially - the ones that we tend to avoid thinking about.  It's about learning to recognize the sources and channels of the energy that flows into us and out of us, and understanding those sources.  The first step to processing our feelings is letting ourselves feel them.  Whatever feelings you have, whether they are joy or anger or sadness, you have to let yourself feel what you feel.  To process those feelings, don't push them away - instead, recognize them, acknowledge them, and take time to honestly seek to understand them.  Think of where those feelings are coming from, why they are affecting you as they are, and where you may need to direct them.

When we try to purge the perceived "negative" parts of ourselves, we're never going to succeed at doing anything except driving them deeper - and we may be able to hide them, but we'll never be rid of them.  When we talk about letting go of things that "do not serve us," that doesn't mean we can just get rid of all the things about ourselves that we don't like - it means that we reject the guilt and shame that those things trap us in. There are parts of ourselves that we need to come to terms with, and many of those parts are often sources of guilt or shame for us, but they are also necessary parts of our being, like anger or sexuality or fear.  Anger can grow out of control if we let it rage untamed, but properly directed, it is also a powerful impetus for necessary changes in our relationships or in society more broadly.  Sexuality is a primal urge for most people in some form or another, but if we don't temper it, it can lead us to make stupid decisions or cross inviolable boundaries.  Uncontrolled fear can paralyze us and make us hide from the world, but it is also nature's way of protecting us from danger.  The parts of ourselves that we think of as "bad" are often just like fire: welcome on the hearth, but not in the storehouse.

Shadow work is all about balancing the ledger: coming to terms with the core of ourselves so that we know where the wells of our inner strength lie so that we can draw from them when it's time to confront our weaknesses.  When we've done spell-work throughout the growing light of the moon to control our energy and focus, there will be feelings that we may have had to push aside in order to do that; shadow work during the waning moon is the time to stop repressing those things and come face to face with them so that we can reckon with them and be in a place of balance when the light begins to return.  In the ancient Greek holy place of Delphi, the Temple of Apollo was inscribed with three maxims.  One was "nothing too much," which can be taken as a way of saying "everything in moderation."  Another was "give a pledge and trouble is at hand," which is a good way of defining boundaries and understanding how one comes to carry too many obligations.  But the last, the most enduring, and certainly the most important for the purpose of capturing the essence of shadow work, was two simple words that have echoed throughout the millennia: "Know thyself."

Daily Divination: Tyr's Day, 8th of Haustmánudr, Year I

Today's Events:

  • Waning Gibbous Hunter Moon

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Fool
(Innocence, New Beginnings, Leap of Faith)

Message: X of Wands
(Accomplishment, Burden, Obligation)

Sometimes the only way for me to shed the burdens I've carried for so long is to set them aside and take a courageous step into the unknown.  I cannot choose to simply abandon all of my responsibilities and obligations, but I can choose to look at new opportunities as a blank slate.  Even though I can't go back in time and undo what has been, I can keep my eyes raised to the future without letting the past weigh me down.  The accomplishments I have achieved up to this point came with responsibilities, but they have also laid the foundation for even greater successes.

The Runes reveal ᛒ Berkana, the Rune of Growth, as today's Rule of Right Action. Its counsel is to take time to nurture new ideas and projects, allowing them to develop and flourish. Enjoy the process of creation and recognize its potential.

Today's Affirmations:

  • I can take a leap of faith as long as I trust in myself and hold to my courage.
  • I rely on my passions to fulfill my goals, but I also discern between my own responsibilities and those of others.

(Celebration, Community, Foundation)

When I bring honor and discipline into my spiritual practice and my work and my daily life, it not only commands the respect of my peers, but also helps me reach milestones that are worth celebrating.  I don't need external validation to know the worth of my work, but having my success noticed by others is a powerful motivator.  Earned respect is a by-product of personal discipline, not an end to be chased.

The Runes reveal ᛚ Laguz, the Rune of Water, as today's Rule of Right Action.  Its counsel is to use today for cleansing, rejuvenation, and clarity.  Take time to embrace your feelings and trust your inner guidance.

Today's Affirmations:

Archetype: The Hermit
(Contemplation, Solitude, Inner Guidance)

Message: IX of Pentacles
(Reward, Discipline, Fruition)

There is no shame in taking time to relax by myself when I have worked hard to bring about success; after the busy schedule of staying constantly connected to clients and coworkers and other people in my life, being able to disconnect and enjoy the fruits of my labor in peace and quiet is a fair reward.

The Runes reveal ᚹ Wunjo, the Rune of Joy, as today's Rule of Right Action.  Its counsel is to take time to celebrate your successes and remember to appreciate the joy and support you receive from your relationships and achievements. There is great value in celebrating your victories and cherishing the sense of belonging and safety that enriches your life.

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Fool
(Innocence, New Beginnings, Leap of Faith)

Message: III of Arrows (Swords)
(Heartbreak, Grief, Jealousy)

When I experience heartbreak and sadness, I can never heal from it as long as I wallow in it. I must process my feelings, but part of processing feelings is breaking their control over me, and sometimes the only way to do that is to take a leap of faith and make an active choice to leave the grief behind.  The problems are still carried on my back, but I refuse to let them slow me down any longer.

The Runes reveal ᛒ Berkana, the Rune of Growth, as today's Rule of Right Action. Its counsel is to take time to nurture new ideas and projects, allowing them to develop and flourish. Enjoy the process of creation and recognize its potential.

Daily Divination: Thor's Day, 3rd of Haustmánudr, Year I

Today's Events:

  • Third Day of Opet

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Wheel of Fortune
(Change, Cycles, Fate)

Message: IV of Pentacles
(Conservation, Protection, Frugality)

I will not always have control over the circumstances of my life; the Wheel weaves privation and prosperity alike. I must confront hardships using the resources I have available, even if that means I have to use resources I would rather not use.  If I avoid handling problems because I am concerned about the preservation of my resources, it can lead to those problems becoming even more costly in the future. Resilience to hardship requires understanding the difference between being frugal and being miserly.

The Runes reveal ᚲ Kano, the Rune of Fire, as today's Rule of Right Action.  Its counsel is to trust your inner light, follow your intuition, and be open to illumination, revelation, and new understanding.

Today's Affirmations:

  • It is beyond my power to stop the Wheel from turning, so I adapt and flow with whatever comes my way.
  • I have enough to be stable and safe; resources are useless if they cannot be expended.

Daily Divination: Odin's Day, 2nd of Haustmánudr, Year I

Today's Events:

  • Waxing Gibbous Hunter Moon
  • Second Day of Opet

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Hanged Man
(Sacrifice, Release, Martyrdom)

Message: VII of Arrows (Swords)
(Manipulation, Deception, Strategy)

When I think too much about the way forward and spend all my time strategizing about the minimization of pain and labor instead of simply doing what I know I need to do, I am often left with failure or incomplete success; sacrifices, even painful ones, are sometimes necessary for achieving my goals. When I waste time trying to plan how to get what I want without paying the price, I deceive myself.

The Runes reveal ᚾ Nauthiz, the Rune of Constraint, as today's Rule of Right Action.  Its counsel is to explore and understand areas where you may be feeling scarcity or restriction, and to have patience during times of delay or hardship.  Assess whether you are devoting adequate time and resources to self-care.

Today's Affirmations:

  • I cannot expect progress and success if I am not willing to make the sacrifices necessary to ensure them.
  • I examine my motivations carefully and try to find the way that is right, even if the right way isn't the easy way.

Reflections for Mabon

A drawing of an autumn maple leaf.

Today is the equinox, an astronomical event that occurs twice per year at which the sun sits directly over the equator.  In more commonly understood terms, the equinoxes are the two days of the year when the daylight and nighttime hours are roughly equal to each other everywhere on the planet (the name "equinox" comes from the Latin for "equal night").

This may not seem particularly important, but it is one of humanity's longest-held understandings of astronomy.  We knew how to recognize the annual variations in the time and position of the sunrise and sunset before we even invented writing.  Knowing how to read the calendar in the heavens - learning the relationship between the position of the sun and the procession of seasons - is what enabled us to discover agriculture, which was (and remains) the very foundation of human civilization.

In the northern hemisphere, today's event (technically tomorrow's, if you're in Europe; the sun crosses the equator shortly after midnight tonight by Greenwich time) is the autumnal equinox, which marks the astronomical transition between the seasons of summer and autumn (if you are reading this from the southern hemisphere, it is the vernal equinox: the transition between winter and spring).  The tracking of the sun's movements has played a key role in human survival and society since pre-literate antiquity, so it is perhaps not surprising that the equinox has also played an important part in human spirituality since time immemorial, often celebrated as a time of balance and rebirth.

In Ancient Egypt, the equinox usually (though not always) coincided closely with the beginning of the annual Nile floods, which were marked by the three-day Festival of Opet, a celebration of balance in which the Pharaoh was ceremonially married to the sun god Ra and "reborn" as the ruler with the gods' blessings.  In Scandinavia, the Vikings celebrated the equinox as Haustblót, a time of both thanksgiving for the second harvest and of preparation for the long winter months ahead.  In Celtic traditions, it was an unnamed holiday that venerated the Child God, whose name in Welsh Arthurian legends is usually given as Mabon ap Modron, from which Wiccans and most other modern pagan and druidic practitioners derive the common name of the holiday on the Wheel of the Year: Mabon.

All eight sabbats on the Wheel of the Year are important to me, but Mabon is particularly special for a number of reasons.  On a human level, it was the very first sabbat I celebrated when I first began to walk the druid's path in late summer last year, and so it has a special place in my heart as a celebration of personal rebirth marking the start of this journey.  On a spiritual level, it is significant to me as an appropriate day of dedication to Anubis, one of the patrons I venerate, who represents the aspect of my spiritual practice by which I strive for balance.  Although the Lord of Shadows was an artistic muse for many years before I became a druid, Mabon was the first time I performed an actual devotion ritual.  In that sense, the traditions of Opet - the celebration of balance between the human and the divine - are also a part of this season for me.

This year, the energy of the universe at Mabon feels tangible in ways that I'm not sure I've really ever experienced before.  Let me start with one of the more obvious (and universal) things: the weather.  This has been one of the hottest summers I can remember, not necessarily in the "hottest temperature" sense, but in the sheer relentlessness of the heat.  We've had temperatures in the upper 80s and even into the 90s for basically months on end, and very little rain to speak of.  One of the reservoirs out to the east is down by nearly twelve feet, and even though our local ones are faring slightly better, I've still been terrified that our well is going to go dry.  The rose bush in the garden is still putting out new blossoms even in late September.  Then last night, a strong cold front moved through with thunder and rain, and now the weather forecast for the next week is for cooler temperatures and rainy days and just generally the autumn-like weather that I wasn't sure would ever arrive.  The transition was sudden, not gradual.

On a more personal level, my tarot reading for yesterday (which you can read here, if you didn't catch it yesterday) included the Strength archetype, a card that has not appeared in my divinations since May, before the summer began.  This has been a difficult summer, and I've had to weather a lot of different crises - dwindling business (and, by proxy, increased financial strain) as the economy forces the art market into a slump, some unexpected changes to living arrangements (nothing that puts me in danger, but stressful nonetheless), and a series of expensive mechanical problems with my partner's car have all left me feeling like everything is going wrong at once.  After going all summer without seeing Strength, I then saw it on the eve of Mabon, when I was thinking about balance and transitions.  Paired with the Four of Swords, it signals something very important: the nature of the strength required of me is changing with the weather, and the kind of strength I need now is the kind that allows me to take off my armor and rest.

During the summer, I've been relying on raw survival and sheer momentum to try and navigate all of the hardship, and there's strength of a kind in that, but it can't last forever.  I have to attune myself to the work that is gentler but possibly more difficult: resting, restoring my energy, and piecing things back together.  I'm a druid, which means I embrace a certain degree of animism in my spiritual focus.  I don't have to be superstitious to believe that nature is showing me clear signs that an alignment shift is due.  The rose blooming this late even in the midst of a drought is a stark sign of a world that is being driven beyond its natural limits.  I'm not separate from the environment; I'm part of it.  The exhaustion of the land and the exhaustion of my spirit are the same kind of exhaustion.  But Thor's voice in the storm last night reminds me that that exhaustion is not the final word.

When we think of balance, we tend to think of a scale slowly dipping back and forth as it searches for some kind of equilibrium, a simple matter of gravity until the objects on the scale have settled into their respective places.  However, balance isn't always just a passive state; severe imbalances sometimes require radical adjustments.  Balance is an active process that sometimes demands forceful, dramatic corrections.  If you're reading this and feeling exhausted from a difficult summer like I am, be gentle with yourself and heed the warnings you're getting: nature demands rest, and you are also a part of nature.  If you don't schedule time for self-care, your body will schedule it for you.

We're entering the darker half of the year, and that's one reason I particularly like the Norse tradition of Haustblót.  In Scandinavia, where the growing season was short and the harvest had to last through the long months of winter, the ideas of balance were stark: celebrating the harvest was not just a passive matter of thanksgiving, but a functional, intentional act of preparation.  They weren't looking back at the harvest and patting themselves on the back for a job well done while stuffing themselves with turkey and pumpkin pie; their feast was an intentional sacrifice of some of their fruits to honor the gods and the earth, but the day was also marked by taking stock of the harvest and committing it to storage so it could be used through the winter months.  Tools were mended.  Thatch and shingles were checked to ensure the roofs could withstand the icy winter winds and heavy snows that were coming.  Fields were readied for lying fallow through the winter so the soil could be good for planting in the spring.  Animals were cared for and brought in.  The autumnal equinox for them was not just a celebration of an astronomical event; it was a celebration of survival, and a recognition of what needed to be done - both for the home and for the land itself - to ensure that survival.

Our world is much different now.  We live by the rhythms of the work week and machinery and clocks instead of the stars and the seasons and the growth of crops.  Even most of what we think of in pagan circles as ancient, esoteric knowledge is actually mostly modern invention.  In a way, that syncretism only makes those practices more valuable.  In a world order that constantly tries to force us to dwell on our differences and be always productive of fruits we will never be allowed to share, consciously making a choice to ritualize setting aside time and emotional energy for resting and celebrating our shared roots and shared survival is a radical act of righteous rebellion.

The traditions that you celebrate today are not merely quaint amusements - they are intentional choices that you use to wrest back some sense of personal (and, alongside others who walk this path, collective) sovereignty from a society that leaves you otherwise feeling powerless.  You actively choose to give back to the land and honor the balance of nature in a civilization that exploits the earth through unbridled greed.  That may sound a little more militant than you've come to expect from the usual pastoral themes of Mabon, but the stark warnings the earth is providing this year are unmistakably clear: nature will have her way, with or without us.  We can only push so far before she will push back.  We can only greedily feast so much on her bounty before we are no longer welcome at her table.  By choosing to rest, to restore ourselves, and to restore the land, we are also choosing to honor what nature is demanding of us: strength through temperance, and celebration through survival.

Blessed Mabon - may your harvest be bountiful, and may you survive the winter ahead.

Daily Divination: Tyr's Day, 1st of Haustmánudr, Year I

Today's Events:

  • Autumnal Equinox
  • Sabbat of Mabon
  • Feast of Haustblót
  • First Day of Opet

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Fool
(Innocence, New Beginnings, Leap of Faith)

Message: VIII of Pentacles
(Diligence, Practice, High Standards)

When I look at my creative endeavors with a fresh eye, ready to step out on the journey with passion, will, energy, and a sharp mind, I can be diligent and satisfied with the work without burning myself out to achieve the results I want. Part of holding myself to a higher standard means treating each day as a fresh opportunity rather than holding on to yesterday's baggage.

The Runes reveal ᚨ Ansuz, the Rune of Loki, as today's Rule of Right Action.  Its counsel is to expect the unexpected, and be open to what the universe is communicating to you through every circumstance.  The Trickster is often portrayed as a villain, but Loki is often the conduit of wisdom to mankind from the higher realms.  Seek out and share knowledge, be inspired by the wisdom of those who have come before, and communicate with clarity and purpose.  Convey your thoughts and ideas with authenticity and honesty.

Today's Affirmations:

  • I can take a leap of faith as long as I trust in myself and hold to my courage.
  • The universe creates through me, so I accept nothing less than my best.

Daily Divination: Moon Day, 31st of Tvímánudr, Year I

Today's Events:

  • None

Today's Reading:

Archetype: Strength
(Bravery, Compassion, Will)

Message: IV of Arrows (Swords)
(Rest, Restoration, Retreat)

Sometimes the truest form of strength is recognizing when I am not strong; there are times when circumstances will force me to find respite and take time to restore my strength. I must find the wisdom to recognize when such tactical retreats are a necessary part of my journey's progress. Trauma does not make me stronger; it leaves me broken. The true strength is in how I mend myself and lean on those who support me.

The Runes reveal ᚱ Raido, the Rune of Travel, as today's Rule of Right action. Its counsel is to remember that life is a journey. You will have to stop and detour sometimes to overcome obstacles, but it is important to see the journey as a whole and not its individual stopping points.

Today's Affirmations:

  • My strength comes not through force or intimidation, but through assurance and compassion for myself and others.
  • I give myself space for stillness and rest so that I may restore my peace.

Today's Events:

  • None

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Devil
(Excess, Materialism, The Trickster)

Message: Ace of Pentacles
(Opportunity, Prosperity, Gift)

The chains of materialistic thinking can hold me back from prosperity and opportunity. I need to take time for self-care, but I cannot allow self-care to become a trap that keeps me from doing what I need to do to progress; I cannot let the things that make me feel good (or that make me feel better when I'm low) distract me from pursuing opportunities and achieving higher purposes.

The Runes reveal ᚲ Kano, the Rune of Fire, as today's Rule of Right Action.  Its counsel is to trust your inner light, follow your intuition, and be open to illumination, revelation, and new understanding.

Today's Affirmations:

  • I become whole when I break the chains of pride and want that bind me to things I do not need.
  • The seeds of my stability and prosperity will not bear fruit unless I actively tend to their growth.

Message: Ace of Arrows (Swords)
(Clarity, Intellect, Breakthrough)

Knowledge and clarity sometimes come with unpleasant revelations; the pursuit of knowledge is a worthy pursuit, but I must be prepared for the consequences of that pursuit, including clarity in situations where ignorance would have been more comfortable.

The Runes reveal ᚦ Thurisaz, the Rune of Thor, as today's Rule of Right Action.  Its counsel is to embrace the full force of your convictions, stand your ground, confront challenges, and protect your boundaries. It calls you to act with clarity and purpose even in the midst of turmoil.

Today's Affirmations:

  • The books of the universe are always perfectly balanced; for every action I take, there is an equal and opposite reaction somewhere.
  • I let truth and clarity guide my choices, even when they reveal things I would rather not see.

Daily Divination: Freyja's Day, 28th of Tvímánudr

Today's Events:

  • First Quarter Hunter Moon

Today's Reading:

Archetype: Temperance
(Balance, Patience, Compromise)

Message: VI of Arrows (Swords)
(Transition, Searching, Leaving Behind)

Imbalance tends to leave me broken to the point where things cannot stay as they are; I grow too comfortable with the abuses I inflict on myself.  Part of being balanced is managing my energy in ways that leave me with some positive control of my environment; I can't always control all of my circumstances, but if I don't face hardships with an even keel, they may put me off course into uncharted waters.

  • I must make choices of how to spend my energy so as not to create imbalance.
  • I can find healing for my broken spirit, but not in the environment that caused my wounds.

Daily Divination: Thor's Day, 27th of Tvímánudr, Year I

Today's Events:

  • None

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Emperor
(Authority, Structure, Control)

Message: Knight of Wands
(Action, Energy, Fearlessness)

I need dreams and excitement, a zest and passion for progress, in order to motivate me into action, but following through and turning that raw energy into meaningful work requires structure and control. Simply having the desire to accomplish things will not accomplish them, but neither will recklessness. The true strength of intention is determined by my ability to direct my energy and desires with a patient, guiding hand.

The Runes reveal ᛟ Othala, the Rune of Home, as today's Rule of Right Action. Its counsel is to honor your heritage and build on the foundations laid by those who came before you; it symbolizes inheritance and represents your lasting legacy, spiritual heritage, and the alignment of your values with what is truly important. Even if you have radically departed from the expectations of your lineage, you can build a sense of continuity between past and future.

Today's Affirmations:

  • To wisely reign over my life is to recognize which things I can control and which things I cannot.
  • Even though I don't blindly pretend they don't exist, I choose not to let the cares of life dampen my energy and wonder.

Daily Divination: Odin's Day, 26th of Tvímánudr, Year I

Today's Events:

  • None

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The World
(Fulfillment, Harmony, Completion)

Message: V of Arrows (Swords)
(Ambition, Selfishness, Conflict)

Sometimes conflicts happen and are necessary, but at times, winning those conflicts is just as empty as losing. I must keep my feelings rooted firmly in the interconnectedness and belonging of all things, even after conflicts. Fighting isn't always avoidable, but restoring harmony (not just the negative peace of inaction during injustice) is always a priority.

The Runes reveal ᚺ Hagalaz, the Rune of Disruption, as today's Rule of Right Action.  Its counsel is to weather whatever storm you may be facing with grace and use the experience to grow stronger and wiser.  Some disruptions are inevitable, but you can focus on how you respond to them.  By finding ways to adapt, you can turn what seems like a destructive force into a powerful opportunity.

Today's Affirmations:

  • All things are connected, and I have a place in that connection.
  • I don't have to win every fight at every cost; sometimes the prize isn't worth the sacrifice.

Daily Divination: Tyr's Day, 25th of Tvímánudr, Year I

Today's Events:

  • None

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Hierophant
(Morality, Tradition, Conformity)

Message: II of Wands
(Planning, Potential, A Decision Made)

I can have big dreams and set out on journeys to new places without forgetting where I came from or dishonoring the traditions I was raised with. The keys to the doors of the future are often to be found in the wisdom of the past; change is an inevitable part of life, but change simply for the sake of change is rarely wise.

  • I don't have to change who I am or conform to others' expectations in order to be worthy of love.
  • I allow myself to have grand designs, and I choose not to let them remain mere visions.

Daily Divination: Moon Day, 24th of Tvímánudr, Year I

Today's Events:

  • Waxing Crescent Hunter Moon

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Moon
(Illusion, Intuition, Confusion)

Message: X of Wands
(Accomplishment, Burden, Obligation)

If I ignore my intuition and shut out the warnings of my inner voice, I am convinced by illusions that hand me responsibilities and burdens that I don't have to carry.  Sometimes I need to trust my instincts instead of letting my own compassion and work ethic be used by others as tools to manipulate me.

The Runes reveal ᛖ Ehwaz, the Rune of the Horse, as today's Rule of Right Action.  Its counsel is to maintain trust and cooperation, knowing that the journey may be slow, steady, but ultimately rewarding.  It is a reminder that steady and positive change is happening right now even if it is gradual.  Pragmatism and incremental change can lead to significant achievements.

Today's Affirmations:

  • I carefully consider whether I am truly listening to my higher self rather than merely telling myself what I want to hear.
  • I carry my own responsibilities without adding the weight of things that are not mine to carry.

Today's Events:

  • None

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Hermit
(Contemplation, Solitude, Inner Guidance)

Message: IX of Cups
(Satisfaction, Stability, Indulgence)

Often, the greatest sense of self-satisfaction and emotional stability comes after much time spent in quiet contemplation, taking time in silence to listen to the wisdom of my inner voice. In an age where I have many things competing for my attention at all times, those moments of quiet are a luxury I should treasure.

  • In moments of quiet solitude, I can shut out the noise of the world enough to hear my inner voice speaking, if I will listen.
  • Even when I lose sight of my purpose, I choose to value myself and know my own worth.

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Tower
(Broken Pride, Upheaval, Sacred Destruction)

Message: King of Wands
(Broad View, Leadership, Conquest)

If I want to build something grand that will stand the test of time, I must first demolish what stands in the way, and clear away the rubble of discarded dreams and broken pride so that I have a good place to lay the foundations of something better.

The Runes reveal ᛋ Sowilo, the Rune of Vitality, as today's Rule of Right Action.  Its counsel is to bask in positivity and success, and appreciate the blessings and little victories in your life.  Continue pursuing your goals with enthusiasm and confidence.

Today's Affirmations:

  • I choose to break the structures that need to be broken, and to see greater purpose in the acts of sacred destruction.
  • I have the vision to create something greater than myself, if I can summon the will to build it.

  • None

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Wheel
(Changes, Cycles, Fate)

Message: VII of Cups
(Choices, Indecision, Daydreaming)

There are times when many different paths will spread out before me. I should not commit to a path unless I am prepared to see the journey through to the end, but once I do, I should commit to it even it means adapting to unexpected circumstances I encounter along the way.

The Runes reveal ᛞ Dagaz, the Rune of Daybreak, as today's Rule of Right action.  It marks a moment of transition from one day to the next; its counsel is to enter the new cycle with hope and illumination, and to seize the opportunities that arise.

Today's Affirmations:

  • It is beyond my power to stop the Wheel from turning, so I adapt and flow with whatever comes my way.
  • I take care in my choices, but I don't let myself spend so much time considering that I have none left for doing.

Today's Events:

  • New Hunter Moon

Today's Reading:

Archetype: Judgment
(Reflection, Awakening, Reckoning)

Message: King of Cups
(Self-Control, Compassion, Empathy)

For me to truly awaken to my calling, I must embrace my feelings without letting them control me. Wisdom is knowing when to embrace compassion, patience, and tolerance; even when the right path is clear to me, I must respect the dignity of those around me who have not yet found the right path.

The Runes reveal ᛚ Laguz, the Rune of Water, as today's Rule of Right Action.  Its counsel is to use today for cleansing, rejuvenation, and clarity.  Take time to embrace your feelings and trust your inner guidance.

Today's Affirmations:

  • I listen to the awakening call of my Higher Self.
  • Not every decision must be a contest between my heart and mind; there are solutions that can satisfy both.

Daily Divination: Odin's Day, 19th of Tvímánudr, Year I

Today's Events:

  • None

Today's Reading:

Archetype: The Devil
(Excess, Materialism, The Trickster)

Message: X of Cups
(Fulfillment, Gratitude, Gratification)

True emotional fulfillment cannot come from material things. It comes instead from letting go of worldly, materialistic concerns, breaking their chains that bind me away from closer connections to the people and things that truly matter most.

The Runes reveal the Blank Rune of the All-Father as today's Rule of Right Action. Its counsel is to embrace the duality of uncertainty and possibility: the unknowable from which everything has the possibility to occur. What you do now will shape what is to come. Step into the unknown with faith and courage - the path forward will be illuminated step by step.

Today's Affirmations:

  • I become whole when I break the chains of pride and want that bind me to things I do not need.
  • The people and moments that matter most in my life are the truest sources of joy.

Ownership of Growth

A photograph of a gravel pathway through a forest under a bright blue afternoon sky. Sunlight illuminates the trees on the left side of the path, and shadows darken the trees on the right. Patches of grass grow up through the gravel, and a gulley is washed out on one side.

As we approach the New Hunter Moon in a few days (and the sabbat of Mabon shortly after that), I feel like this is a good time to discuss the overall philosophy of this blog.  I've been running this space for about three weeks now, and I feel like in that time, it's helped me nail down a key element of my spiritual practice that I've always felt, but didn't quite know how to put into words.  Now that I've found my footing a bit (and especially after my previous entry about affirmations), I think I am able to talk about it a little bit more clearly.

I said in my post about affirmations that I really dislike "schmaltzy, saccharine, pop-psychology" toxic positivity.  I was talking specifically about tarot-inspired affirmations in that post, but I've realized that it also applies to my spiritual philosophy as a whole.  So many people turn to spirituality because they want validation and comfort.  Those are certainly important parts of spirituality, but there has to be more to it than that.

I left Christianity behind partly because the validation and comfort were so toxic.  As a child in the church, you're taught (and you internalize) "God loves you" and "you're very special, made in God's image," and "he's got the whole world in his hands" and things like that.  That's a great comfort.  It's validating.  To be told from a very early age that you are part of some divine plan, that you were meant to be here, that you're unconditionally loved... there isn't much that's more comfortable and validating than that.  But it's a dead end.  You grow up and find out that, in fact, that love does come with terms and conditions.  And a lot of the judgment of Christianity comes from a place of saying "I love you, but I can't condone your differences sin."  You're special... until you're the wrong kind of special, then your specialness has to be eliminated redeemed.  If that's what "love" is, just give me hate.  At least hate is honest.

Toxic validation is when your thinking goes beyond saying "I am good enough" and veers into "I am better than others."  It goes past "I am doing what is right" and into "my way is the only right way."  Toxic comfort is when you go beyond being serene and into being complacent.  Toxic comfort is when you shut out the injustices of the world around you (or worse, directly contribute to them) because you don't feel that making sacrifices of your own is a fair price of living with the rest of society.  This isn't just a criticism of Christianity; there are a lot of neopagan spaces that are just as toxic.  It's the same poison, but it presents itself in different ways.

I already mentioned how so many tarot writers emphasize toxic positivity in their affirmations, but really, that's just one presentation of a larger problem: people want the instant comfort of personal validation but are not willing to do the arduous shadow work (a large part of which is self-reflection) required for true fulfillment.  As I've said before, if you want to feel the empowerment of pagan spirituality, you have to be willing to be honest with yourself, even (or perhaps especially) when it's not immediately validating or comforting.

My father used to be a Baptist minister (he eventually left the church after considerable disillusionment of his own), so I grew up hearing people say that a pastor's job was to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable."  In many pagan spaces, I see people who clearly view themselves as "the afflicted."  And to be entirely fair, many, many pagans do come from broken families and/or are part of marginalized communities.  One of the most beautiful things about modern paganism is how it encourages diversity of both identity and thought, and acts as a place of safety from what often feels like a cruel (or, at best, uncaring) outside world.  However, far too often we feel so caught up in the warmth of that comfort and the sense of safety it gives us against external turmoil that we aren't willing to confront the darkness inside ourselves, or consider how our comfort might be coming at the expense of others who are also marginalized.

Here's a challenge for you: go to any spiritual/metaphysical shop and see how long it takes you to find Harry Potter merchandise.  It's a bit of a toss-up; some shops might have it, some might not.  Most of the pagans I know understand that giving money to anything Potter-related is contributing directly to the unpersoning of trans people in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.  It's easy to feel some satisfaction from knowing "Oh good, I missed that, I'm fine."  (If you haven't confronted your own relationship with Harry Potter, please don't stop reading; there's a point to all of this that isn't just sanctimonious pontificating, I promise.)  Here's a bigger challenge: now go into the same shop and see how long it takes for you to find something about "chakras" or "smudge sticks" or white sage or palo santo.  Some of you may not even have to go to a shop; it's entirely possible that you have one or more of those things on your altar already.  Here's the thing: the concept of chakra (and, for that matter, the entire concept of karma) is an ancient Vedic practice that is still very much alive and well - and very much not meant for white people.  At least, not for the uninitiated.

The conceptualization of the chakras in Western esoteric practice is a bastardization of a system of beliefs that is still very much part of active (and closed) practice.  The concept of "smudging" as a form of smoke cleansing is an Indigenous American practice - again, not for white people.  White sage and palo santo, which are critically important to Native American spiritual practices, are on the verge of being endangered because of being over-harvested to satisfy the demand (of white customers) in spiritual shops.  When we co-opt the traditions of ancient (but still very much active) closed practices, often merely for aesthetic purposes, we desecrate them.  Worse, we ignore (and often actively contribute to) the ongoing struggles of their practitioners, and that is entitlement disguised as openness.  There are a lot of popular practices in modern paganism that really don't belong to white pagans.  I'm not going to go on a deep dive of that here because that's not really the overall point of this post, but Flying the Hedge has an excellent post on the topic of decolonizing your practice, and I highly recommend giving it a read.  The point is, even though many of us come from marginalized communities ourselves, we still need to remember our intersectionality and be willing to confront our own place in systemic injustice.

It's not just limited to appropriating closed practices.  How many times have you followed a pagan content creator on Facebook or Instagram, then seen them share a post with the uncanny, glazed look of an image that is clearly AI-generated?  One of the most popular tarot apps in the Google Play store right now offers AI-generated tarot readings.  That cutesy AI-generated image may seem harmless, but it takes up a space at the table that could have been given to an actual, living (and likely struggling) human artist.  Moreover, it probably burned down several acres of rainforest.

Environmental concerns aside, how can a machine understand the energy that passes through a human soul?  AI is deliberately designed to never confront you; it can only ever reinforce your beliefs, never challenge them.  The worst disagreement you are ever going to get from an AI chatbot is something like, "I'm sorry, but my programming or terms of service won't allow me to answer that question.  Please ask something else."  Go to a local spiritual shop (if you have one nearby) and ask if there's anyone there available to do a tarot reading for you; you're supporting a local store that probably needs money.  If you don't have a shop nearby, talk to another pagan online (beware of scams, of course).  If you can't do any of that, do the hard work of studying the tarot and learning what it says to you yourself.  It's time-consuming and sometimes frustrating, but it's more real than anything a computer can give you, and once again: empowerment requires honesty.

Philosophy and spirituality, to me, are useless when they are limited to internal psychology and beliefs.  It's easy to say all the right things and check all the right dogmatic boxes to fit into just about any spiritual practice, especially when your practice is a syncretic blend of ancient traditions and folktales and aesthetics, no matter how beautiful that practice might be.  What's much harder to confront is how our beliefs lead us to treat real, actual people - our participation in our communities, our understanding of actions and consequences, and our stewardship of the living world around us.

I don't want my spiritual practices to be a shield against my own self-accountability.  I don't want to just "believe in Jesus and be saved."  I don't want to "let go, let God."  But neither do I want to lie to myself and convince myself that a stack of cards on paper and ink is magically telling me exactly what I want to hear to feel better about myself.  I don't want to believe that holding a crystal is giving me "clarity" to move forward with something I already wanted to do anyway.  These things are tools for helping me think.  They don't do the thinking for me.  More importantly, they don't do the acting for me.  If I am imperfect (and I am), I want to be an active part of my redemption to my higher self.

I want stewardship over my own self-improvement.  I draw a card from the tarot not because it's a magic message from beyond, but because it's a point of ordered thinking from a shuffled, chaotic stack of thoughts.  I hold a crystal not because it magically lets me see more clearly, but because it holds part of the energy of the wise earth that gave birth to it, and when I hold it, the connection acts as a reminder that I, too, hold some of that energy in myself.  I thank the flower for its place in my ritual not because I think it can hear or understand me, but because the deliberate action of gratitude for the things the earth has provided is important for me to recognize.  I work with Anubis and Thor not because I see them as actual metaphysical entities, but as visual ways of conceptualizing parts of my own psyche in tangible ways that I can understand (Anubis as the part that values thinking and balance, Thor as the part that values action and strength of intention).

I'm wholeheartedly including myself in all of the criticisms here; I don't always succeed either.  I snap at people.  Social media tends to bring out the worst in me.  I aim at the wrong targets a lot; people around me get hit by friendly fire.  I make consumer choices that aren't ethical.  The list goes on.  I'm not sitting up here on a mountain of moral high ground preaching "you're doing paganism wrong."  I'm not saying all of this as some kind of "holier than thou" sermon.  The things I express in this blog are aimed at (even if they don't always succeed) carving pathways for my readers to take ownership of their own journey.  I don't want to give pat answers and trite, cheap validation.  That's not what I'm about.  That's too easy. What I'm really trying to do is articulate that the overarching philosophy of this blog (the whole page, not just this post) is that I want to be better, and I want you to be better too, because the core of everything that I believe is that inside each one of us, there is a better version of ourselves wanting us to draw closer.

That involves cutting out the toxic positivity and being honest with ourselves, and cutting out the toxic negativity of hopelessness that leads us to abandon our agency.  For all that the world is terrible, I refuse to believe that we can't hold humanity (including the systems we live in, the people in control, and ourselves) to a higher standard.  I refuse to believe that we can't live up to a better standard. It's so easy to become jaded and cynical when we see all the injustice in the world around us, but the world - and we ourselves - can be better if we believe there's a better version of the world waiting for us to build it.  We're on this journey together.

Blessed be.

A Conversation about Affirmations

A pink hibiscus flower.
A hibiscus flower (Rose of Sharon) - a traditional symbol of resilience.

I really love affirmations - that is, short little bits of wisdom that you can say to yourself for empowerment.  Oftentimes, they're super simple and you do them without thinking just to psych yourself up: "I can do this." "Come on, you've got this." A really popular practice among tarot and divination writers is to attach an affirmation to each card that is associated with that card's interpretation in some way.  For example, in today's daily divination, one card is the Page of Swords - normally associated with insatiable curiosity and observation.  For an affirmation, I wrote, "I begin to search for answers even if I don't yet completely understand the question."

What I'm really not a fan of, however, is the way so many tarot writers rely on schmaltzy, saccharine, pop-psychology-style affirmations (many of them probably written by ChatGPT or whatever) like "I am a beacon of crystal-clear truth" or "Everything is working out for my highest good."  I really hate that.  They're thought-terminating clichés that leave the querent with nothing to do except hope that the universe hands them whatever the gooey affirmation is promising (spoiler: that pretty much never happens).  The whole purpose of spirituality is self-empowerment, and there's nothing empowering about that.

To be clear, I am a dedicated believer in the power of positive self-talk - yes, even if it sometimes ventures into the realm of "fake it 'til you make it."  But repeating some cloying mush phrase like "the universe aligns itself to my wishes" when you can clearly see that the world is falling apart around you isn't positive self-talk - it's toxic positivity.  Worse than that, it is being dishonest with yourself.  Those kind of affirmations take away your intellectual and emotional agency, which is the exact opposite of empowerment.  It might make you feel better in the moment, but there's a steeply diminishing return on its effectiveness, because you're not stupid - you know when things aren't right, and lying to yourself doesn't miraculously make them right.

To empower yourself, you have to be honest with yourself.  I'm not saying you should wallow in your despair (because that's just as unhelpful as toxic positivity), but you have to let yourself feel how you feel.  The idea behind affirmations is not "I'm going to tell myself I feel great when I actually feel miserable."  The idea is actually "I'm giving myself permission to deal with these feelings."  And that applies whether your feelings are good or bad!  I've known so many people who are legitimately terrified of ever feeling happy - not because they enjoy being miserable, but because the eventual inevitable descent from happiness to unhappiness is more uncomfortable for them than just staying unhappy all the time.  Affirmations are about affirming how you feel, not about hiding from it.  They are pathways to action, and a roadmap to helpful mindsets regardless of whether you're deep in the valley or on top of the mountain.

I'm doing my best to avoid those useless, sappy affirmations.  There are obviously some limitations to a tarot blog; everyone's situation is different and ever-changing, so the Ace of Wands might say something completely different to you today than it did two weeks ago, and I can't really account for that.  But the goal is always to leave you, the reader, with some agency.  One of today's cards is the Magician, which represents willpower, desire, and manifestation.  An easy affirmation would be "The world shapes itself to my desires," but that's toxic positivity, because the world obviously doesn't do that.  The agency is within you: "I carry the power to shape the world around me to suit my needs, if I summon the will to use it."

That's affirming, because it acknowledges that the power is inside of you, but it also leaves you with the responsibility of exercising that power.  A useful affirmation is a direction that you can give yourself for how to move forward.  The practice of tarot, affirmations, and indeed, of spirituality in general can be soothing in troubled times.  There is comfort in it, which is one reason why people turn to it.  But it's not helping you if it soothes you into a passive state of optimistic apathy.  You still have to be the one to travel the path and find your way.  Spirituality provides the trail markers, but it's up to you to read them, to interpret them, and, most importantly, to take the steps along the path they blaze for you. It's not the safe harbor - it's the lighthouse.  Don't give up the ship.

Blessed be.

If I am to heal from the wounds of the past, I must preserve only the good memories and otherwise keep my eyes forward, and step into the future instead of dwelling on the things of the past that are holding me back.

  • I can take a leap of faith as long as I trust in myself and hold to my courage.
  • I can build a good future even on the foundations of a broken past.

Archetype: The Chariot
(Focus, Control, Willpower)

Message: II of Arrows (Swords)
(Indecision, Denial, Stalemate)

When I am plagued by indecision and difficult choices, the best thing I can do is take a step back and take stock of which things I can control and which things I cannot, then focus on controlling what I can. This focus carries me through hard decisions.

The Runes reveal ᛈ Perth, the Rune of Secrets, as today's Rule of Right Action. Its counsel is to embrace the unpredictable and adapt to the ways chance affects your circumstances. Make the best of unforeseen situations and find the value in the unknowable role of chance and change.

Today's Affirmations:

  • I control what I can control and let go of what I cannot.
  • I cannot make perfect decisions, but I do my best to see the better outcome in every choice.
